NQT Best Practice
This section is aimed at supporting schools to fulfill NQT induction by sharing good practice, please see the attached documents.
Completed NQT action plan: Harry Potter
Completed action plans need to be sent to TwS within the first month of NQT induction. This example gives an idea of what a completed plan should look like. Three or four targets will suffice and these need to be linked to the Teacher Standards.
Completed second assessment: Hermione Granger
This gives an indication into what a completed second assessment may look like. The Teacher Standards have been evidenced in different ways – some are bullet points, some are paragraphs; some comments are primary based and others secondary. It is useful to highlight next steps or targets as these feed directly into the next induction period and to list sources of evidence used to reach the judgements. Make sure all the boxes have been ticked and completed as missing information delays processing and sign off. In particular ensure the form is dated and signed by the Headteacher, NQT and mentor and that the recommendation box has been ticked, the number of absences and dates of the induction period in question have been completed. The NQT also needs to add their comments and it is useful for them to reflect on the progress they have made as well as aspects they would like to develop further as Hermione here has done.
NQT Support Plan: Ron Weasley
This is an example of a completed support plan. Clear targets (linked to Teacher Standards 6 and 7) and actions have been set to support Ron. This needs to be drawn up by the NQT and their mentor and a copy sent to the Local Authority. The Local Authority needs to be alerted as soon as a school has deemed that an NQT is not making satisfactory progress and the NQT must be regularly kept informed of their progress. Model NQT Induction Policy
All the requirements for NQT are set out in the Statutory Guidance. This exemplar can be used as the basis for an NQT Induction Policy but will need to be edited and personalised to meet the needs and procedures in place in your school.
