Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSA) Training

ELSAs work with vulnerable children individually or in groups to improve their emotional wellbeing and build emotional literacy

Outline

The training package is a combination of direct input and group supervision delivered by Educational Psychologists

The initial ELSA training is delivered over 6 days and covers topics including:

  • Emotional literacy including building resilience and self-esteem.
  • Managing emotions including anger and anxiety.
  • Social and Friendship skills.
  • Using social and therapeutic stories.
  • Loss, bereavement and family break up.
  • Active listening, reflective conversation skills and projective techniques.

Professional Group supervision is provided half termly to ensure continued support, development and reflection. The supervision is in place to practise and safeguard their work with pupils.

Description

ELSA is a national initiative which involves the training and supervision of specialist teaching assistants on schools by Educational Psychologists. These teaching assistants become certified as Emotional Literacy Support Assistants (ELSA) and develop skills and understanding in child development, well-being, resilience and mental health. The expected outcome is that schools have increased capacity to support pupil with social, emotional and mental health difficulties from within their own resources

Outcomes

The outcome of this course is to develop the role of an ELSA within the school. This identified person will be able to support the needs of pupils with social, emotional and mental health difficulties.
